Victoria Olaosebikan – Communication & Media Technology

About Victoria

Hello! I am Victoria Abisola Olaosebikan. Please don’t try to pronounce my last name. Many people have suffered from biting their tongues trying to do so. Just kidding! With a name like this, I’m pretty sure you are wondering where I’m from. Anyways……. I’m from Nigeria, located in western Africa. I was born and raised in Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria.
Four words that best describe my personality: godly, caring, creative and generous. Maybe a fifth word would have been funny but my sister thinks my jokes are cheesy. She would probably prefer annoying as a fifth word.

I am currently a graduate student pursuing a Master’s degree in Communication and Media Technology at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT).  Alongside studying, I work on campus as an administrative assistant at the Dean’s Office, College of Liberal Arts, where I assist deans and faculty members with various office assignments and projects. I have also worked with the school of communication as a graduate assistant in my previous semesters.

Why RIT? I chose to study here because America has one of the world’s best higher education systems as well as the world’s largest international student population. Rochester Institute of Technology is ranked as one of the top universities in the country. So why not? Completing a master’s degree in one of the country’s best will indeed help me achieve my career goals. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Communication and Media Studies from Ajayi Crowther University, Nigeria. During my undergrad, I had the opportunity to work at two broadcasting stations in Nigeria where I worked as a reporter intern. To know more about my work experience, click on the link below.

Other interests

Aside from my interest in the media, I also aspire to become a fashion designer and entrepreneur. I’m very creative and I love designing women’s clothing, especially dresses. I don’t know if it’s fair for me to say that I love fashion design more than I love working with the media, but it has been my number one dream ever since I was a little kid. I began sketching dresses about the age of seven or eight. I was so obsessed with my Barbie dolls that I would go as far as making them dresses with my socks. Funny! Fashion illustration and design has been a natural talent, that has become a hobby. Ever since my passion for it has grown. After I graduate, I plan to go to fashion school and start my clothing line. At the moment, I’m learning how to sew and also trying to improve upon my fashion illustration. So, watch out for one of the world’s best potential fashion designers!

Here is one of my illustrations. Ignore the caption. Lol

I also love music and I sing as a part of the choir in my church. So…. Yes! I’m a Christian and I love God. Plus, I’m also a good dancer, although mostly in my head. I love cleaning and organizing, so when things go missing around the house, everyone knows who to ask – me! Because I must have kept them in the appropriate place. I also love cooking and eating, but you wouldn’t know because I’m as skinny as the word skinny. Just kidding!

I’m kind of reserved, and I think I express myself better when I write. So, if you find me being quiet or shy, don’t be surprised. If you also find me talking a lot, still don’t be surprised. I can also be loud, especially around people I’m familiar with.

I also love helping people, I hope to own a foundation someday where I can give back to society. For now, I just do small projects back home in Nigeria to reach out to the underprivileged. For me, being successful goes beyond having material wealth. In my opinion, success is meeting a need in society. I believe everyone was created for a purpose; to add value to the world in one way or another. I believe life will never make sense until you begin to live according to your purpose.

Moving forward, my future goals include going to a fashion school, getting more experience in communication, internet marketing, and owning several businesses. If you want to know more about me; and if you want me to get an A in the class for which I’m writing this profile, please click on the link to resume and LinkedIn below. Thanks for your time!

Emily Hawk – Writer and Communication & Media Technology Student

Hello! It’s nice to meet you, I’m Emily Hawk.

Currently, I am a second year grad student at Rochester Institute of Technology, pursuing a masters in Communication and Media Technology. I also work full time as a writer in the finance industry for an investment management company local to Rochester. I was born and raised in the Rochester NY area, where I spent my summers on Keuka Lake and my winters on Bristol Mountain.

After graduating high school, I moved to Washington, D.C. to get a Bachelor’s Degree from American University in Public Communication with a minor in History. Post graduation and moving back home due to the high cost of living in Washington, D.C., and a few years working in customer service, I found my position as an RFP Information Specialist at Manning & Napier. I now spend my days writing about investment strategies and my nights learning about communication theories and techniques. I’m extremely interested in writing: specifically, how writing is becoming a more and more critical skill as the world moves to rely on the text-based world of the internet.

Outside of my professional and academic life, I have a few hobbies I love. Mainly, I love being outside, whether that means camping, hiking, boating, skiing, or sitting around a bonfire with friends. I also love music, especially live music, so I attend as many concerts as possible. I’m a dedicated Buffalo Bills fan and Formula 1 enthusiast, which are, as many of my friends have pointed out, the most different sports I could possibly support. In general, I like to spend time with family and friends and enjoy the great area of Rochester and western New York.

If I haven’t bored you yet and you’d like to get to know me, feel free to follow any of the links below!

My story – RIT New Media Marketing Student

In my time as an RIT new media marketing student I’ve done my best to get involved with a ton of the awesome opportunities here. Here’s a bit about the journey I’ve been on since I joined the RIT community.

The RIT Newsman

the_RIT_newsman_photo

What I love about RIT is the diverse array of amazing events, clubs, and people. I’d often find myself having an absolute blast at an RIT event that I didn’t even know was happening until I walked outside my dorm room.

I wanted to find a way to bottle up those amazing experiences, in order to share them with my friends and family.

I’ve also loved YouTube since I was a kid, and after learning the basics of video production in my high school’s Broadcast Journalism club, I enlisted my friend Oscar to help me create a weekly entertainment news series about RIT.

In Fall 2017 Oscar and I partnered the series with the RIT Office of Undergraduate Admissions. We currently produce the series to advertise RIT to prospective students.

It’s been really powerful to hear people talk about how our series helped them choose RIT as the right fit for them.

You can check out The RIT Newsman here!

Afterbox

In my third year as an RIT new media marketing student, after seeing the success of the RIT Newsman series, I became obsessed with how markets either embrace or reject new products and services. The success of a company is largely determined by how that company is perceived by the public.

I also became close friends with Zack Banack, a fellow student in the Saunders College of Business. Zack started at RIT as a computer security major, and had a lot of experience working for large companies doing freelance game design and development.

Zack and I developed an idea he was working on for a mobile application that facilitated the legacy preservation process that happens when an individual dies. We designed the app to help users store their best thoughts and memories, and send them to their friends and family when the user passes away.

Afterbox was featured on the Apple Music show Planet Of The Apps in Season 1, Episode 9. From that experience, in 2017 Zack and I were offered the opportunity to be apart of the Lightspeed Venture Partners Summer Fellowship program in Palo Alto, California. Here we learned the ins and outs of what it takes to make a startup successful.

Kysa – Social Media Specialist

All About Kysa

Portrait of Kysa W
Kysa Willemsen – New Media Marketing

From a small town in Ontario, Canada named Forest, Kysa Willemsen is in her fourth year at the Rochester Institute of Technology. She is studying new media marketing with a minor in advertising and public relations. She will be graduating with a bachelor’s degree in May of 2018.

Life as a Student Athlete

During Kysa’s first semester at RIT she decided to try a new sport. That is when she became a member of the RIT crew team. Since joining she has been a rower and coxswain for both the women’s and men’s teams. Practices at 6AM each morning have helped her stay on top of her studies. Even finding ways to prioritize time management when she is travelling for races. Balancing school, sports, work and a social life has proven to be difficult but she wouldn’t want to change this experience for the world. Overall, being a student athlete has taught Kysa control, motivation and flexibility.

Studying Abroad

Kysa at Big Ben
Kysa Abroad in London, England

In the spring of her third year at RIT Kysa studied in London, England at the London South Bank University. She embraced opportunities to travel and learn from cultures all around Europe. Her favourite was to enjoy locations that were off the beaten path rather than tourist-targeted locations. Unlike the American school system, academics in England were set up differently. Each course was weighted mostly on one exam or paper therefore it highlighted the fact that second-chances aren’t always available.

In the “Real World”

Since 2014 Kysa has gained experience with Sunripe Freshmarket. She helped introduce social media and online communications into the company’s marketing. In December of 2014 she ran the company’s first online promotion. This was for a buy 1 get 1 free event they hold yearly. This event was only advertised with traditional marketing platforms prior to that year. During the event that December Sunripe saw a large increase in year over year sales at a fraction of their previous marketing costs. Today, Kysa continues to manage all of Sunripe’s online communications through Facebook, Instagram, website and email. This includes promoting products and events, answering consumer questions, creating content and more. All from anywhere in the world.

Social Media Influencers and Their Impact on Consumer Behavior

Social media influencer marketing is still a relatively new trend, but it’s quickly becoming a go-to tactic for marketers seeking the attention of a generation of distracted, advertising-adverse consumers. For decades, marketers have used catchy slogans, graphics, and celebrity endorsers to get their audience to focus on their message. But today, traditional media channels are in decline and consumers are getting used to entertainment without interruption. Therefore, brands need reach their audience in more subtle and cost-effective ways. Enter, the social media influencer.

Generally speaking, influencers are social media users who enjoy substantial popularity on platforms like Instagram, YouTube, or Twitter. Many of these influencers are celebrities like actors, musicians, or athletes. Celebrities are frequently used in advertising because they are great at capturing consumer attention. In a world where it’s getting easier to avoid advertising altogether, that’s a difficult task! However, creating an advertising campaign with a popular celebrity is an expensive and time-consuming process.

Why use influencers?

Influencer marketing can achieve the same goal of consumer attention, but in a much simpler way. Instead of hiring photographers, creatives, and a media team, brands let the influencer create content and distribute it to their thousands or millions of followers. This strategy is not only cheaper and more efficient, it also has greater potential to impact consumer opinions because the audience has opted into following an influencer and likely cares about what they have to say.

By sharing aspects of their everyday lives on their social media profiles, these celebrities make their fans feel more connected to them than ever before. This also makes them more susceptible to subtle brand messages intertwined between personal posts about what the influencer ate for lunch or what they did on their vacation.

The new celebrity influencers

While many of the most popular social media influencer accounts are owned by traditional celebrities, social media has also given rise to another subset of influencers that are a lot more like your average Joe. The ‘social media celebrity’ is a new breed of public figure that starts off as an ordinary social media user.  Through sharing interesting, original content, hey manage to acquire a mass audience of followers and the attention of brands.

Many of these social media influencers exist within niche online communities, like travel, parenting, fitness, or fashion. Their opinion leader roles in online circles make them attractive for brands targeting a specific audience actively looking for information. These influencers are also pros at fostering meaningful, relationships with their followers that make them seem like friends. Brands can take advantage of these relationships by using influencers to spread positive word-of-mouth about their products on social media.

The Internet and social  media has caused drastic changes in the media landscape. This shift has challenged marketers to find new ways to reach their audience. Social media may be a distraction from traditional advertising channels, but it’s also an opportunity. Brands that learn how to harness the power of influencers and connect with online audiences will be able enhance their image and increase awareness more efficiently and cheaply than ever before.

About My Hometown

I am from Beijing, China, a city that has more than 3000 years of history.I am a proud of being born and raised in Beijing. It’s a massive city with plenty of great things to do. There are six Unesco World Heritage Sites in this city alone. All of them have been established more than a thousand of years ago. It’s also a city that never sleeps, there are all different kinds of bars, cafés, night clubs, live shows which keep me busy every day and night.

One thing I miss the most about Beijing is the food.  I can find great food from all over the nation or even from all over the world in this one city.

I love that Beijing has different faces. In winter, the lakes freeze as icy winds whip south from beyond the Great Wall, carrying with them the echo of Manchu rule. Come summer, Beijing is all rolled-up t-shirts, icy beers and street-side lamb skewers. There are many words to describe it: filthy, beautiful, decadent, bustling, chaotic, idle, lovable.

From sprawling imperial gardens to cramped ‘hutong’ alleyways, Beijing pulses with vitality and contradiction.
