Oluwatosin Arowosola

Digital Brand Manager

Hey guys! My name is Oluwatosin Arowosola. Too long, but you can call me Tosin (toe-sin). I have a BSc in Mass Communication from University of Lagos, Nigeria and currently a graduate student at RIT studying communications and media technology.

Let me take you on a journey about my passion…

I have a great interest in investigating brand communication, consumer engagement/behavior, digital media, and marketing/ advertisement. As an international student, I strive to look for opportunities that enable me acquire experiences in industries that are related to my field.

A philosophy I live by is

“Always know what to say, when to say it, how to say it, and most importantly to whom it should be said”.

Some Experiences

One of my most memorable experiences was an interview with Erin Foster, former director of marketing communications, Eastman Kodak. This was an opportunity for me to tap into her experience and expertise to learn about some real challenges, and how it was tackled. Watch here.

The Empty Hanger TV: An engaging multimedia project, that shows how and why clothes matter. Working on this project, helped me learn so much about the American market and also to see the difference, if any, in how digital marketing works or how it affects the target audience. I was able to see how a new business can use the new media to get a head start in the market. My research was focused on; management research tools, social platform scheduling, content type per platform and so on.

My most recent experience comes from Children Awaiting Parent (CAP). A non-profit organization, dedicated to finding adoptive families for waiting children. Every brand wants to have that online presence. My major role at CAP as a brand manager was to revamp the online presence, by creating campaigns that help to increase the brand’s identity. Some of the things I did included, but weren’t limited to, marketing campaigns, implementation plan, content creation, graphic design, website management and social media management.

The most interesting aspect of my role at CAP was the graphics design aspect. It was a challenge, but an exciting one which I am proud of myself for taking on. See, I had little to no idea on graphics design, but I basically taught myself how to use the available design software as it was a necessary tool to help me produce amazing results in my role as a brand manager.

I’m eager to continue learning and positioning myself in industries I can add value to.

About me

My name is Ariyana Anvari. Some people call me Ari. I am an International Business major with a minor in Marketing and immersion in Spanish. Cars, traveling and learning about new cultures are a passion because I grew up in Ariyana Anvaria very diverse household. With my dad being from Iran and my mom from The Netherlands, I am able to blend well in a multicultural environment. Uniquely, my fondest memories growing up come from the holidays and traditions we celebrate each year. These include holiday’s such as Persian New Year and Dutch Christmas on December 5th. Find me on Ariyana’s Facebook to follow the rollercoaster of cultural adventures!!

Past, Present and Future

Of course, any individual wants to be just like their parents growing up. As well as, trying to set their own path as an individual. Similarly, with my goals and dreams, I am able to accomplish that by getting my business degree at Rochester Institute of Technology. I am looking into the 4+1 MBA program in order to follow in the footsteps of my dad. Coming from Washington D.C., I have been fortunate enough to be immersed in the city life with lots of cultural experiences. Including, but not limited to, a couple of job experiences that have enhanced my skills in a business setting. Additionally, through all of my knowledge gained at RIT and past job experiences. I want to obtain a job that encompasses my travel and cultural side as well as my creative marketing skills.

Accomplishments (Ariyana Anvari)

Comparatively, coming to a school like RIT has given me many different opportunities to branch out. Taking chances and striving for anything you put your mind to is apart of the development as a student.

Therefore, in my Business 2Technology enabled class, I was fortunate enough to work on a team that came up with a revolutionary headphone product called DefBeats. DefBeats target the deaf community for individuals to feel the music at a flip of a switch. We designed a three mode switch that bring’s the two world’s together for the hearing and non-hearing consumers. Moreover, this product was designed to incorporate the marketing and business plan from the original product. Together with, a vision in mind, we eventually took the idea to the next step. Our team started a website in my Internet Marketing class (which is still in the works) to show off the prototypes and ideas.  Website prototype: https://scbsocial.com/gp6/

Google’s Penguin update, triggers and how to recover

The Google Penguin update is aimed at focusing the SERP ranking of the site which used manipulative links violating the webmaster’s framework by using black-hat SEO techniques to falsely increase the site ranking. This was commonly termed as Link Schemes. It also involves keyword stuffed all across the site. This packing of keywords artificially increases the relevance of the site, in turn, increasing the rank. It was started in April 2012 and after evolving over the years, in 2017 it became a part of Google’s core algorithm. Small companies who have managed with quality content and avoided these techniques gained a boost. So, what triggers the algorithm? And if you were affected, how to recover from Google’s Penguin update? Let’s find out.

How Google’s Penguin update algorithm is triggered?

Google’s Penguin update is triggered when site builders use Link Schemes and Keywords Stuffing.

  1. Link schemes works in the process where they have low-quality site are acquired for artificial reputation. Fake comments, Spam on internet forums was a part of this link scheming process. This linking scheme helped them gain more traffic and increased the rankings of the site which used this influence even if the quality of the pointing site was not related.
  2. Keyword Stuffing involved populating and packing the keywords across the site to increase the relevance. This stuffing once again falsely increases the ranking as Google finds the site to have a higher relevance.
  3. Penguin filter is a part of the algorithm which deindexes your site. This blocks all traffic to your site. It can also be a manual penalty if one of the links pointing towards your site was uninvited and was reported as spam.

How to recover if your website is affected by Google’s Penguin update?

Check if you really are affected by the penguin update or just a manual penalty first. If it is the Penguin update, optimize the following things.

  1. Identify and markdown the low-quality links pointing to the site. If they are not relevant, remove the unwanted links.
  2. Optimize the content with a good 15/200 ratio of keywords to content and remove unwanted stuffing of keywords.
  3. Perform a content audit to deliver good quality content.
  4. Allow Google to recrawl and reindex you content post optimization. Make necessary changes and make sure to not break Google’s rule. This is the least needed to not get a ban on your SERP.

Ryan Black: Aspiring Creator of Media

My name is Ryan Black and I am a fourth year student studying New Media Marketing major at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). In addition to co-oping for RIT’s Saunders College of Business’s internal communications department, much of my time is currently spent as the Technology editor for the school’s magazine: Reporter.

Through my work for Reporter I’m come to decide to seek a career in media. Whether it’s content I’ve written myself, materials studied through course work, or pop culture I am a fan of, media is a great passion of mine; one that I wish to also become a profession. It is my hope to find a way in a professional capacity to create, market, or help facilitate media. The areas of pop culture I am most personally invested in are Film, Comics, Video Games, and Television.

Whether it’s from the perspective I have gained as a marketing student, or the one I have as a fan, I have come to see the value in thinking critically about content that is produced. Thinking about media to me has become more than just thinking about what it on the surface conveys, but also about the thought and deliberation that must have went into the construction of a piece of content itself.

In seeking a career in media, I hope to be able to learn from other perspectives and disciplines, as I’ve done at Reporter where multi-disciplinary collaboration is commonplace. It’s a dynamic that’s also made me ready (and even eager) to embrace the unconventional, as well as the unexpected.

Resume Ryan Black New Media Marketing

Andy Klingenberger – New Media Marketing Professional

Is there a more difficult thing to do than to write about yourself? What’s important to leave in? What’s better left out? And, the balance between self-aggrandizement and truth is a thin one.

I’ve been working in the marketing field for the past few years, as you can see from my LinkedIn profile. Right now I concentrate on the email end of marketing, designing nurturing programs through various marketing automation platforms. (I’ve used Pardot and Act-On extensively.) I do not, however, just handle the logic end of email marketing.

I also write the copy for those programs – as well as for one-off emails, sales users, and company communications. I can design a message that takes up 250 words, or I can distill it down to its essence if it needs to be put into 140 characters for Twitter. I’m adept at both – and despite what Vampire Weekend thinks, I still care about the Oxford Comma.

Cauliflower Pizza Crust Recipe

A Healthy Alternative: Cauliflower Pizza Crust

Being a food lover, I recently decided to take on the challenge of finding healthy recipes for classic comfort foods. This week, I tried a recipe that I have been curious about: Cauliflower Pizza Crust.   I love pizza, and I knew that this recipe would be a fun one to experiment with!  As far as health benefits go, cauliflower has vitamins and minerals that cannot be matched by traditional pizza dough.  A serving of cauliflower provides 100% daily value of vitamin C and 200% of vitamin K.  It also carries antioxidants believed to protect against diseases. After learning this, I became even more excited to tackle this healthy pizza recipe!

Cauliflower Crust Ingredients:Cauliflower crusted pizza

  1. 1/2 cup cauliflower, grated
  2. 1 egg
  3. 1 1/4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  4. 2 tablespoons parmesan cheese

Directions:

To create the crust, start by shredding the cauliflower using a grater.  Following that, warm up the cauliflower in the microwave for about 7 minutes, until soft. Once the mixture cools, mix it with one egg, mozzarella cheese and parmesan cheese. The final step before cooking is to spread the mixture into a thin crust on a pan.  It is very important to fully pre-cook the crust at 425 degrees until golden brown before adding the toppings to ensure that the crust is not soggy. I topped my crust with sauce, cheese, pepperoni, spinach, and tomatoes.  Once the pizza is full of delicious toppings of your choice, cook for another 10 minutes.

The result will not disappoint! This healthy pizza is packed full of the same flavors found in a traditional pizza, without the guilt after indulging. Given that cauliflower is such a healthy and versatile vegetable, I plan to use it a lot more in my cooking.

I hope you try this recipe out and enjoy it as much as I did!

Create Crayon Art

How to Create Crayon Art:

crayon art
Creating crayon art is very easy, and fun! In order to create this art you will need:

  1. Crayons
  2. Hot Glue
  3. Paint (if you want)
  4. A canvas
  5. Hair dryer

First you will decide if you want to paint anything to your canvas, if so start painting! I typically paint Disney characters, people in the rain under umbrellas, or paintbrush handles. If you need more inspiration before deciding what to paint you can click here! Also above you can see my crayon art as an example, that I created for inspiration as well! If you don’t want to paint anything, you can move on to the next step. Next you will pick out the color of the crayons you want! The colors and the order of the crayons are completely up to you and what look you are trying to achieve for your art piece. You then glue the crayons to the canvas, I prefer to leave the wrappers on the canvas with the words facing forward, so they can still be read after being glued. Once again it is your decision though! Then you take the hair dryer and melt the crayons. You can move the hair dryer around to get the desired design and movement on your canvas. Once you have melted the crayons to your liking you are finished! You have now created your very own crayon art! I hope you enjoyed this crayon art tutorial and experience! Enjoy your newly made crayon art!

Gen 6. Dragonfly: The Launch

The Next Generation Lacrosse Shaft
The Dragonfly Gen.6 C30, E30, and X30 have finally arrived, and it is even more Epoch then you could have possibly imagined. “The Gen.6 Dragonfly is engineered with some serious technology on the inside that is complemented by clean, crisp, bold cosmetics on the outside.” Designed with Flex iQ and Advanced Carbon Layering (ACL) the Gen.6 consists oGen-6-2f multiple layers that have been strategically placed within the torque box. The torque box is located within the shaft, at two critical points of hand placement, just above the bottom hand and right below the top of the
shaft. Epoch believes it is crucial to strengthen a lacrosse shaft from the inside out. The stronger the shaft is at the core, the lighter it is at the ends. The Gen.6 will now take its place alongside the Maverik Gait Ice, and the Apollo, making it one of the lightest lacrosse shafts on the market. The lighter the shaft, the more power it brings to your game. The Gen 6 offers a level of flexibility and strength not previously found in any other shaft on the market. The torque box itself is unique to to Epoch, it works by strengthening from the inside out, to avoid possible dents or breaking of the shaft. This is a concern for many, as men’s lacrosse is a full contact sport. Epoch also allows you to choose from many different levels of flexibility, depending on which position you play. If you haven’t made the investment yet, you need to! Perfect for all levels of competition. The Gen 6 is available for both men and women.  Make every game Epoch, with the new Gen.6. LIVE.PLAY.BE.

Life As A RIT Student

Ever wonder what life is like as a RIT Tiger?

RITMemorialDrive

At RIT, life as a student can be pretty fun. Rochester Institute of Technology has a little over 18,000 students with plenty of classes, clubs, and events for everyone.

One of the coolest things at RIT is the diverse amount of wellness classes. As a student, you are required to complete two wellness classes of your choice. Many have loved the Outdoor Education classes where students can go Cross Country Skiing, Kayaking, Rock Climbing, etc. These classes ad some fun to your semester and you can always take more than two of these classes before you graduate! Check out the classes offered here!
During the winter season, if you aren’t a hockey fan, attending RIT will surely make you one! To show pride for the Tigers, some of the best events on campus are the hockey games! Be prepared to cheer on your Tigers in the student section with all of your fellow classmates!
When the cold winter days finally turn into the warm spring days, make sure you have time to hang out at Global Village. Global Village has a lot of nice shops and great food choices. One of the favorites on campus is Salsaritas, which is the go-to restaurant where students can sit outside when the weather is nice. Lets not forget about the bar that’s on RIT’s campus, which is perfect for that drink between classes or after finals!
These are just some of the advantages of being a Tiger! Life as a student at the Rochester Institute of Technology is never boring!
