Does Lionel Messi Deserve The Best Player in the World in 2019?

After a successful season by winning the Spanish La Liga trophy, Copa del rey runner up, and UCL semifinals with Barcelona, FIFA declared this year that Lionel Messi is the best player in the world in 2019. Lionel Messi this year beats Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus) and Virgil Van Dijk (Liverpool) to win his sixth FIFA’ best player in the world award. This prize makes Messi in the top record of the number of winning FIFA’s award separating Leo from his rival Cristiano Ronaldo who received the FIFA’ best player award five times and last one was in 2017 with Real Madrid. A period of three years in row since his first award in 2009 is considered the longest of not being the best world player for captain Barcelona, Messi.  However, the real questions, does Lionel Messi really deserve the best player in the world in 2019? Is his accomplishments in 2019 considered the best among players? If not, then who should be the best player?

 Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo?

In the last decade, there was a high competition between the two players Messi and Ronaldo upon who is the best player in the world. From 2008 and 2017, the award was equally obtained by either Messi or Ronaldo (five times each), leading to an ongoing debate in who is the best player in the world. However, many people also thought neither Messi nor Ronaldo deserve it in some years. For example, many argue that in 2010, Messi should not have been chosen as the best player in the world over his teammate in Barcelona Andrés Iniesta or Xavier Hernández, who also acquired the world cup with their national team, Spain. The same problem happened with Ronaldo who was announced to be the best player in the world in 2013 beating his rival Lionel Messi and Franck Ribéry (Bayern Munich). Since Bayern Munich won the UEFA Champions’ League that year, many thought Ribéry is going to be selected the best player in 2013, but the surprise was that Ronaldo who only won the La Liga with Real Madrid obtained it. So, is 2019 FIFA’s award replicating what happened in 2010 or 2013? Probably, Yes. despite his 36 goals in the La Liga, Messi in 2019 only won the local league while Virgil Van Dijk won the UEFA Champions’ League with Liverpool after 12 years and also led his national team, Netherlands, to the UEFA Nations League Final. Thus, it seems that the legend of Lionel Messi plays a critical role in influencing the FIFA to announce Messi as the best player in the world in 2019.

Why is Virgil Van Dijk the Best Player in the World?

While many may claim that Messi’s talent is superior Van Dijk, FIFA’s award is always built on the achievements a player reaches during the year instead of the pure skills. Obviously, Van Dijk with Liverpool in 2019 gained the most valuable trophy (UEFA Champions’ League) besides his team was also only over a point of Manchester city to attain the local league that has been absent from Liverpool for more than 20 years. Also, with the national level, Netherlands team was suffering last years. Netherlands team did not even qualify for the world cup in 2018; however, in 2019, by Van Dijk leading, the team made it to the UEFA Nations League Final. All these successful achievements of Van Dijk emphasizes that he deserves to be the best player in the world in 2019, neither Lionel Messi nor Cristiano Ronaldo. Hence, the last question would be who will be the winner of the Ballon d’Or in 2019? Is it the number six for Messi or Van Dijk will receive it for the first time?

Abdulrahman Almuajel-Marketing and Digital Marketing MBA

Hello!! My name is Abdulrahman Almuajel. I am from Saudi Arabia, Riyadh, and currently pursuing a master’s degree in business administration, concentrating in Marketing. I work as a Teaching Assistant at Prince Sattam Bin Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia.

me and my COUNTRY

You may have heard a lot about Saudi through the news, but whatever it was, Saudi is a lovely country😊. The country is going via many changes in order to replace the dependency on oil to have multi-sources. Hence, they launched a new project called “2030 Vision”. This vision focuses on various aspects, such as entertainment, housing programs, life quality, health, internal and external investments, and education. You might be wondering why I am writing about my country, the reason is that as a part of the society, I want to contribute to this vision positively and as a “Teaching Assistant” education is the appropriate field. Therefore, to be a part of this development, I have come to RIT to enhance my knowledge and gain new experience. I will be graduating in May 2020; however, the master’s will not be the last stage because I am also aspiring to continue my studying and obtain a PhD.

My philosophy and dreams

I strongly advocate the concept that education is the core development for any individual, organization, and even country. This belief was the inspiration of being a Teaching Assistant and then starting the journey at RIT as an essential step to my goal, the PhD.
Nevertheless, the PhD will not be the last stage in my relationship with education as my dream is to be a professor at the university. I love learning and helping people, and being a teacher is the ideal way to learn and help. Also, having a combination of academic knowledge and practical experience is what leads to an active professor. Therefore, I also seek opportunities where I could gain some insights from real-life examples so that I can be a consultant besides being a professor.

After graduating, I worked at Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (the central bank) as Performance & Compensations Evaluation Researcher. I was a part of the human resource department, particularly performance management. It was a unique experience, but I did not feel that the place is where I belong. Then I obtained the chance to work in the education field at Prince Sattam University, which was the begging of my dream. I have taught a course about how to write administrative reports and overseen undergraduates during their internships. It just felt right! I enjoyed the teaching experience, and then I was finally able to study abroad where I am now. I hope to continue this educational journey and then go back home where I can share and pass on what I learned and observed.

What I did

I graduated in 2017 with my Bachelor’s of Science in Advertising and public relations here at Rochester Institute of Technology. During my undergrad time here at RIT, along with some fellow students and Rochester local business man, I opened my own beverage store – Tai Chi Bubble Tea. Soon, I understand in today’s constantly growing complex business world, new and existing entrepreneurs require all business knowledge which equips them to remain not only sustainable but also competitive as well.

Why I went back to school

Theory and application must go hand in hand. Currently, I have reasonable business acumen and I understand and apply the real business world situations and strategies. Despite understanding and applying these strategies, I feel that still more conceptual work and theoretical foundations are essential for the uninterrupted business success in every changing business environment. After reviewing various business programs and their usefulness, I found the program here at RIT as the most advanced and appropriate to improving my business knowledge and understanding as well. Additionally, it is expected that this program is going to add more clarity to my current knowledge of the business.

My business objectives

Business growth and business expansion are two of my business objectives in future. After graduating from the university, I do not intend to seek employment instead I plan to continue my business. For this, it is highly essential that the business must not only grow but also expand. This growth and expansion requires improving business knowledge and all those theoretical strategies which are taught at the graduate level are highly fundamental.

Please Help Me Before I Cry and Fail

Hi I’m Jessica Gover and I am a fourth year marketing student at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). I promise I don’t cry all the time, just on days that end in the letter “y”. But really, if I were to pick a life motto, I would say that is is ” I am here for a good time, not a long time”.  For me that means spending time doing the things I love. Not to mention bringing a positive attitude and humor to every situation.

Working as a Lax Bro

The end goal for me professionally, is to get involved in sports marketing and contribute to the expansion of underrepresented segments. My experience in sports marketing comes from my current position as the marketing manager at RIT SportsZone. I am responsible for leading a team working towards increasing the reach of social media platforms, as well as promoting the image of SportsZone Live. SportsZone covers over 23 individual collegiate athletics team. My passion for sports marketing comes from the fact I am an athlete myself, as part of the RIT Women’s Lacrosse Team. Through all  of the broken bones, injuries and tears, I can with complete honesty, say it has been the best 3 years of my life so far. Being an athlete myself is what inspired me to pursue marketing in a sports related field. It is an area I feel passionate about and can relate the most to. Check out the links below to learn more about me and connect with me to start a conversation.

Update 4/1/17

I recently decided to take a leap of faith and get outside my comfort zone by participating in the Living Through Sport program. At the end of June, I will be traveling to London, England to work an international sporting event as well as networking with industry professionals. For someone who frequently introduces themselves as a homebody, this is a big step for me. A typical Friday night for me usually involves watching Netflix. I’ve never been outside of the country on my own, so I’m scared and excited at the same time. I have always wanted to go abroad, and this is the first time I have actively pursued that goal.

My story – RIT New Media Marketing Student

In my time as an RIT new media marketing student I’ve done my best to get involved with a ton of the awesome opportunities here. Here’s a bit about the journey I’ve been on since I joined the RIT community.

The RIT Newsman

What I love about RIT is the diverse array of amazing events, clubs, and people. I’d often find myself having an absolute blast at an RIT event that I didn’t even know was happening until I walked outside my dorm room.

I wanted to find a way to bottle up those amazing experiences, in order to share them with my friends and family.

I’ve also loved YouTube since I was a kid, and after learning the basics of video production in my high school’s Broadcast Journalism club, I enlisted my friend Oscar to help me create a weekly entertainment news series about RIT.

In Fall 2017 Oscar and I partnered the series with the RIT Office of Undergraduate Admissions. We currently produce the series to advertise RIT to prospective students.

It’s been really powerful to hear people talk about how our series helped them choose RIT as the right fit for them.

You can check out The RIT Newsman here!

In my third year as an RIT new media marketing student, after seeing the success of the RIT Newsman series, I became obsessed with how markets either embrace or reject new products and services. The success of a company is largely determined by how that company is perceived by the public.

I also became close friends with Zack Banack, a fellow student in the Saunders College of Business. Zack started at RIT as a computer security major, and had a lot of experience working for large companies doing freelance game design and development.

Zack and I developed an idea he was working on for a mobile application that facilitated the legacy preservation process that happens when an individual dies. We designed the app to help users store their best thoughts and memories, and send them to their friends and family when the user passes away.

Afterbox was featured on the Apple Music show Planet Of The Apps in Season 1, Episode 9. From that experience, in 2017 Zack and I were offered the opportunity to be apart of the Lightspeed Venture Partners Summer Fellowship program in Palo Alto, California. Here we learned the ins and outs of what it takes to make a startup successful.
